Still calling them “Natural Catastrophes”!

I call bullshit.

Yes, maybe a bit harsh of me, but the risk equation is about vulnerability to hazards – and not enough smarts are being used to manage vulnerability. For too long we have kept asking the wrong questions.

Coverage from the front page of this weekend’s Financial Review

We focus on recovery – and replace with more expensive assets. This “Oak tree stand strong” philosophy vs reed flexible bend thinking simply increases vulnerability.

Local Government gets a bad press. They are service providers. They row – not steer. State Governments are responsible for life and property. It is that level of government which has not adequately addressed gaps.

We still focus on the visible – the wall of water, the wall of fire. Let’s keep beating the drum. Vulnerable is key! Always was, always will be. Yes it is an uncomfortable conversation – especially when it peels back poor decision making, greed, and exploitation. But it is an ongoing conversation which needs to be had – then transferred into action.
